Why does it need administrator rights?
Reading the Windows Prefetch directory (for last-90-day app usage),
machine-wide installed apps in HKLM, and multi-user profile metadata
all require admin. The tool elevates once at launch via UAC and
never installs anything persistent.
What does the tool migrate?
Files in Desktop, Documents, Pictures, Videos, Music, Downloads,
plus heuristically-detected "looks like user data" folders on other
drives. Browser bookmarks from Edge, Chrome, Brave, and Firefox.
An inventory of installed apps and which ones you actually used in
the last 90 days. It does not migrate passwords, email
data (PST/OST), or Outlook signatures — those are handled
separately by mailbox migration.
Is my data encrypted in transit?
USB path: the agent refuses to write to a drive that isn't
BitLocker To Go encrypted. OneDrive path: data flows over TLS to
Microsoft 365 with Microsoft's standard encryption at rest. No
Valcourt-controlled servers ever see your file contents — only a
per-session manifest with file hashes.
How does the IT remote-assist session work?
When you launch the agent on your old laptop, it shows a 6-character
session code at the top of the wizard. Share that with the IT
engineer who's helping you. They visit
migrate.valcourt.net/join, sign in with their Valcourt
Entra account, and enter the code. They'll then see your scan
results in real time and can drive the wizard from their machine.
